Pianos are popping up all over Silver Lake!

Why do pianos keep appearing in interesting locations all over Silver Lake?

Last summer, a real Wurlitzer piano appeared in Sunset Triangle Plaza for Make Music Silver Lake 20130621_123007 (part of the 2nd Annual Make Music LA) on Summer Solstice, then was wheeled back down Sunset Blvd to Micheltorena Elementary & Community Garden, where she has lived all year, entertaining young and old alike. https://gaiagrove.wordpress.com/2013/06/19/make-music-silver-lake-fri-jun-21-sunset-triangle-plaza-concert-make-music-la/

1378666_213433962113575_873739697_n

In October of last year, the same Wurlitzer was also wheeled down Sunset Blvd East to Laurel & Hardy Park for Music Box Steps Day, celebrating the famous Silver Lake staircase of the classic black & white comedic film “The Music Box Steps”, where she was played by many before being transported back to the garden.

photo(17)

This summer, a Story & Clark piano named Georgia appeared in the Plaza the day before Summer Solstice. She was played by many people leading up to and throughout Make Music LA on Summer Solstice, and then has been so beloved by all in the Plaza she is now living there permanently, after being adopted by Vivian of the tasty & popular Pine & Crane restaurant.

Then, just in the last week, a baby grand piano arrived at the Silver Lake Library – she has been donated to Friends of Silver Lake Library and will be dedicated this Thurs eve 7/10 at 6:30PM!

Why are all of these pianos popping up all over Silver Lake?  Could it have anything to do with the 20th Anniversary of Music Box Steps Day taking place Sat October 18, 2014?

Silver Lake Neighborhood Council ~ Culture, Community, Change

neigh·bor [ney-ber]
noun                                                         http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/neighbor

1. a person who lives near another.
2. a person or thing that is near another.
3. one’s fellow human being: to be generous toward one’s less fortunate neighbors.
4. a person who shows kindliness or helpfulness toward his or her fellow humans: to be a neighbor to someone in distress.
5. (used as a term of address, esp. as a friendly greeting to a stranger): Tell me, neighbor, which way to town?
6. (adj) situated or living near another: one of our neighbor nations.
7. verb (used with object)to live or be situated near to; adjoin; border on.
8. verb (used with object) to place or bring near.
9. verb (used without object)to live or be situated nearby.
10. to associate with or as if with one’s neighbors; be neighborly¬†or friendly
(often followed by with).

No matter what our differences are as a community on various issues, shouldn’t a neighborhood council serve as a helpful, constructive advisory board, a group of peers, a friendly counsel of neighbors interested in the community, providing transparent representation for the community, and helping celebrate neighborhood pride?
At the very least, as neighbors, shouldn’t we aim to BE NEIGHBORLY with each other?¬† WITH, not against?¬† Not even just theoretically, let’s see what the SLNC bylaws say:
B. Purpose:
1. To fairly and faithfully represent the interests of all Stakeholders.
2. To provide an inclusive forum for discussion of Community issues.
3. To be a source of information for the Community on Community issues and governmental matters.
4. To educate, encourage, and facilitate in helping make government work better for the Community.
5. To participate in the City budget-making process to assure that resources are allocated equitably among all communities and within our own community.
6. To work to improve the delivery of City services to the community.
7. To advocate for the community on issues of community agreement.
8. To support the efforts of existing community groups and to encourage cooperation among these groups.
9. To maintain lines of communication with adjacent Neighborhood Councils and community groups and to work together with them on matters of mutual concern.
10. To participate in the planning and development process to assure a balance among diverse Stakeholder interests.
11. To sponsor community projects that enhance the beauty, vitality and cohesion of the community.
12. To acknowledge, support, preserve and improve the environmental integrity and rich cultural heritage of Silver Lake.
13. To organize and support social functions and cultural events that bring people together and lift the human spirit.
14. To conduct other business and act as is typical of other certified Neighborhood Councils.

Encourage cooperation ~ provide an inclusive forum ~ cohesion of the community ~ bring people together and lift the human spirit ~ YES!

In alignment with these aims are several colleagues running with me for Silver Lake Neighborhood Council both independently and in progressive coalitions (supported by numerous community members) namely my friend, colleague & neighbor Charles Herman-Wurmfeld (At-Large).  We have been visiting various regions of Silver Lake to hear what is important to people and are encountering tremendous stakeholder interest in the concepts of fairness, kindness, neighbor-oriented solutions and near-unanimous support for responsible, local-regulation determination of shared economy services, in ways that make sense for the MOST neighbors who live, breathe, work, play, and commune in Silver Lake day and night. Other friends of mine Georgene Smith Goodin, Lucha Sitz, Frances Tran, James Bigelow, Helen Dion etc are running and are strong candidates & community members ~ and so is the rest of our coalition. Please check out and support the Yours Not Ours Coalition at http://www.yoursnotsours.org

Now, on the flip side, I do not understand how the more conservative slate in this election is purporting in any way to be a “Neighborhood” Council, a “”neighborly” council, or anything related to being a good “neighbor” (also conflicting with so many of the SLNC’s own bylaws) as in their current slate’s web links, they refer individuals to resources on how to anonymously spy upon their neighbors and secretly report them to authorities. How is that cooperative, balanced, or even kind?¬† Is that the kind of neighborhood council we want?¬† Is that really the best recourse for solving problems?¬† We seek to unify our community, not divide it further.

This is just one of many issues.  Your input welcome, your vision desired, your views welcome. This is YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, and we humbly and graciously request YOUR VOTE in person this Sat Apr 12, 2014.

Amy Clarke, Gaia Grove, Silver Lake ~ April 2014

Hawk Magic ~ The Messenger ~

Last night, a hawk swooped into the tree above my house, landing on a large branch, with another smaller bird clutched between its talons. Hawk is one of my three main bird totems, otherwise known as medicine animals, the other two being Crow/Raven & Hummingbird, so I was not surprised to see her.

Especially since, after meditating on Eagle totem at New Moon, I called out to Hawk just afterwards, at the Crescent Moon, with these images & words¬†01_10_2007_0588714001191230042_susan_seddon_bouletposterlux-boulet_susan_seddon-kb_ssb_unelanuhiSusanSeddonBouletVisioning“Thank you, Eagle. Now calling another of my core totems ~ HAWK ~ going to need this powerful medicine for the work ahead. These¬†Susan Seddon-boulet¬†images invoke the energy required at present ~ may it be so. ‘Hawk is the messenger of the spirit world, uses the power of FOCUS, takes the LEAD when the time is right, POWER to see, clear VISION, strong connection with SPIRIT, increased spiritual AWARENESS, keen observation then ACTION at right time.’

20140317_185127 Hawk clearly answered the call.

However, what was unusual is that another of my friends who lives in the neighborhood had just shared a story with me yesterday morning of a hawk landing on a branch outside HER window, grabbing a mourning dove in its talons, then taking off into the sky.  This hawk seemed to have a pigeon as its prey as well, also a member of the Dove family, so I paid closer attention.

And yesterday morning, after hearing her story, I called out to Dove “thank you, Hawk medicine, energy has been strong & you have served your purpose up until this Full Moon. Your energy released, now calling in Dove ~ birdgoddessbringer of peace & love, understanding of gentleness, spirit messenger, communication between the two worlds, maternity, femininity, prophecy. Myths & legends surrounding dove link it with many goddesses; renowned as the embodiment of maternal instinct. Dove’s brood consists of 2 eggs. 2 is a symbol of creative & feminine energies. Home & family are very dear/meaningful to those with this bird & life lessons are strongest” I went to sleep hoping to understand more about this arrival.¬† Was there war and peace symbology happening here?¬† <<Popularly, ‚Äúhawks‚ÄĚ are those who advocate an aggressive foreign policy based on strong military power. ‚ÄúDoves‚ÄĚ try to resolve international conflicts without the threat of force.>> dictionary.reference.com¬† Did this mean that peace was being sacrificed?¬† I went to sleep with Hawk medicine card beneath my pillow.

I awoke still curious, as dreams did not reveal any further meaning. However, the hawk was still in the tree outside my house this morning when I went to bike with my daughter to school. She seemed to be waiting for me. So, since Hawk is the Messenger of the Spirit World ~ I looked up and asked her what her message was. She cried out, then seemed to look down, where feathers from her conquest (the Dove) were scattered all over the ground.  20140318_085923Suddenly reminded of when a cat brings you a mouse as a gift, I realized Рshe literally brought me what I asked for, when I called for Dove energy yesterday morning.  She showed the dualistic connection between my friend Lucha who lived several blocks away. She reminded me (this was the same day of the small yet close LA earthquake in Westwood) of the raw power and beauty of nature Рand the importance of both nurturing and protecting gifts. She showed me Рagain Рthat the universe is listening, carefully. Words are power.  Thoughts become things.

I paused and honored the spirit of the Dove who served as a symbolic sacrifice (sustenance and nourishment for the Hawk).  I thanked the Hawk for listening, for coming, for bringing her gift. I then carefully gathered the largest dove feathers to turn them into a smudge wand for peace & sang these words to move from symbolism to reality, (be REALLY specific with the universe when asking for things):

I call for wisdom, I ask for peace,

I summon healing of all grief,

I call for gentle justice, love,

and inspiration from above.

Thank you, Spirits of the Wind.

Thank you, Messengers of Air.

Thank you for your gifts and teachings.

Thank you for the insights shared.

Namaste ~
