Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for a wonderfully fun “mini” parade in the Micheltorena Community Garden on Sat May 4, 2013! Special thanks to gardeners Amy Clarke & Charles Herman-Wurmfeld for co-creating event, spreading the word, and collaborating with other gardeners, the neighborhood council, the media & community. To open the day, Leonardo Chalupowicz gave a fabulous compost workshop, Frances Tran gave a good talk about the chickens, we honored the local farmers market & farmers with decorated buckets of compost from the community garden, spoken word artists Rich Ferguson & Nance Broderzen shared beautiful pieces about the garden and all that is growing, we all created a maypole together and then carried it with us in our parade to the farmers market and back again, where we then did a dance with chant and singing led by Amy Clarke on drum (along with volunteers from Benjamin Allen’s Groov3 Dance Workshop) around the maypole, and then we shared food and drink in the garden together. The maypole was then celebrated with the school kids from Micheltorena Elementary on May 8th, planted much deeper in the garden along with some magic climbing beans to reach the top of the pole & their wishes and hopes for the garden, the school, and the community. The maypole now will live in the garden all year; please come by and visit and make a wish on our community & school garden maypole!

Not only did Tara Kolla of Silver Lake Farms gift us with her beautiful flowers as we paraded through the farmer’s market, but Tutti Frutti Farms sent us this lovely thank you note with a picture of where in their acres of fields they added our garden-gifted compost – completing the cycle from field to farmer’s market to garden to compost back to market and the to field!
Greetings,
This is Joy from Tutti Frutti Farms at the Silverlake Market. I attached the photos I showed you of where I placed the compost you gifted us. It will be part of the next crop to be planted there soon. Even though the compost seems so small in comparison to the large field on the farm, it still feels good to bring the cycle back. Many thanks for the thoughtful gift! I also attached a few shots from your parade in front of our booth I thought you might like.
I found your Garden’s facebook page. I think your garden is so amazing and beautful! Thanks for sharing and always collecting the compost. I do not like wasting so it feels wonderful to know the cycle keeps flowing.
Here is the Tutti Frutti Farms facebook link and the website for a little history if you want to see where the produce/compost comes from.
